The Hawks says it is pleading with parents to pay close attention to what their children are exposed to on their smartphones.
The Priority Crimes Investigation Directorate says apart from criminals using the internet for money laundering and other crimes, it is mostly disturbed by the rate at which children are being exploited through their smartphones.
The directorate’s Hangwani Mulaudzi says the danger of this sexual exploitation on children is that it takes place away from parent’s sight and can easily go unnoticed.
“An increasing amount of exploitation takes place in the dark, in the shadows of the internet, on website and message boards, through file sharing and in real time now with webcam.”
